Raising A Self-Reliant Child: Educational Choices For Prepping Families

Raising a self-reliant child is a priority for prepping families, as it should be for all American families. There are multiple educational choices open to parents in most states.Prepper parents are typically focused on the same academic goals as non-survivalist parents – we just also want out children to learn self-reliant skills, and garner a greater sense of independence and responsibility in the process.

The number of homeschooling families has increased exponentially in recent years. The amount of charter schools across the country have also grown at a surprising rate. Parents opt out of mainstream schools for a vast array of reasons, safety, academic quality, and concern about indoctrination are usually near the top of the list.

Government Schools

There is the traditional public school, or government school, as those us who have grown disgruntled with the institution often call it. Nearly my entire family worked in public education, both in paid and elected positions. I worked in a rural public school for a decade, and left once I began to feel like a factory worker and saw the joy of learning evaporating from the academic process.

Charter Schools and Private Schools

Private schools and charter schools are both good alternatives to government schools, but both types of educational facilities have drawbacks from a self-reliance and prepper family perspective. Few charter or public schools exist in rural areas, making geographic limitations the first checkmark in the negative column for those education options. Cost is also a drawback as both carter school and private school tuition can come with a hefty price tag. Level 4 Solar Storm Hits Earth: Lack Of Attention To Fragile Power Grid Could Spell Doom For America

Every minute of every day we face a deadly threat in America, yet very few are paying attention to the problem. A downed power grid would change life as we know it more than virtually any other doomsday scenario ever could; and is far more likely than a plethora of the apocalyptic scenarios contrived by Hollywood producers.

Solar flares hit Earth on March 16, but few noticed. The solar storm or sunspot activity have made the Northern Lights effect possible. While many around the nation were debating the Blood Moon prophecy and the best vantage points to watch the expected eclipse on Friday, others were more keenly focused on the vulnerability of the power grid.

Going back three decades, the United States electrical grid loses power 285 percent more often than it did in 1984, when record keeping began. The power outages cost businesses in the United States as much as $150 billion per year, according to the Department of Energy.

By most estimates, it would take a minimum of three months to possibly an entire year, to garner new transformers after a power grid failure. Like most things we buy at the store, transformers are not made in America. If a grid-down scenario impacts the entire planet, the companies in China and Germany where such components are made, will not be able to manufacture or ship the parts to the United States. Preparedness Tips - Medical Preps: Coconut Oil Uses

Coconut oil has almost limitless uses and should be a part of both your first aid kit and your stored preps. Just as when purchasing essential oils and the natural wonder tea tree oil, there are various grades of coconut oil. The expensive versions of coconut oil might be ultra-fabulous, but the $2.50 jars of organic oil I but at Aldis work so well I have never been tempted to dig deeper in my pocket and try the more costly varieties.

In addition to all of the many great edible uses for coconut oil, the natural white substance also is believed to have healing and moisturizing properties as well. Medium level fatty acids abound in coconut oil. This type of fatty acids are known to be able to delve deep into the fungal membrane and kill the invading fungus while stimulating healing.

Coconut oil also possesses lauric acid. When lauric acid and glycerol are combined, monolaurin is formed. A multitude of studies have reportedly shown that monolaurin prevents the “lipid envelope” of the virus which causes cold sores, to spread. Applying coconut oil to sores on and around the lips several times each day will help heal the sores quickly and reduce discomfort. Click here to read the coconut oil uses.

Emergency Alert System Vulnerabilities Could Allow Terrorists To Manipulate A Disaster

The United States Emergency Alert Systems (EAS) is as vulnerable to cyber hackers as the power grid itself. A security review of the EAS revealed that terrorists could hack into the system and send false orders to first responders during and emergency and send inaccurate information to Americans who have suddenly found themselves in the middle of a disaster zone.

The recent Baltimore riots, Ferguson riots and Boston Marathon bombing clearly illustrated how quickly a typical American neighborhood can be turned into a war zone. Maneuvering home safely during a period of civil unrest would be a dangerous enough endeavor without those who caused the chaos garnering control of the radio waves and internet to further their violent goals.

The United States Emergency Alert System (EAS) has “critical vulnerabilities” according to a recent review by IOActive, a security firm. The ability of the federal government to warn citizens about man-made and natural disasters is key to the survival of the populace. The IOActive Emergency Alert System report stated what would likely unfold if cyber hackers could broke into the system and broadcast fake warning messages to American citizens. Superweeds Threatening The Food Supply?

Superweeds spawned by genetically modified practices by industrial farms, small family farms, and backyard growers, continue to threaten our food supply safety and security.

Both organic growers and those concerned about food security will be dismayed to learn that stronger chemical herbicides are being introduced to combat the hard-to-kill gigantic weeds which have been plaguing farmers for the past several years.

In addition to the battle against superweeds, there is a  new agricultural threat emerging - the self-pollinating peach tree. Since our necessary little pollinators, honeybees, are dying off in record numbers, a self-pollinating tree is good news right? Wrong.

A Sherif Sherif research team has revealed that a recently gene in peach trees that allows the plant self-pollinate rather instead of relying upon an outside source to grow and reproduce. If the self-pollinating gene were inserted into GMO crops, it could result in their numbers contamination of farming lands across the country. Click here to read the rest of the superweeds report.

FEMA Camps Series Part 3 - What Should You Be Stockpiling Right Now?

What should you be stockpiling right now in order to avoid the need to go to a temporary emergency FEMA camp or to meet your family’s needs while attempting to avoid being ushered gratefully to a permanent FEMA resettlement camp? Water, long term food storage items, and plenty of ammo are three of the most important and obvious choices, but there is much more you will need to survive a lengthy disaster.

You do not have to be a millionaire to garner all of the food your family will need to survive a disaster. Growing your own groceries and taking advantage of long term food storage sales help keep the budget in check. As noted in part 2 of the FEMA camp series, working with your neighborhood and community to better prepare the town for a disaster has a lot of advantages. OPSEC is not one of those advantages and perhaps you live in a more rural or isolated remote area, with the nearest neighbor living 50 acres (at least) away. Working with extended family and friends to create a mutual assistance group (MAGS) or a tribe, as I prefer to call it, can achieve the same (or perhaps, even better) preparedness result.

Disaster supplies are essential, but so are skills. Learning sight, sound, and smell discipline will help keep your food preps from being discovered from the marauding hordes. Knowing how to start a fire with damp wood, being able to find your way in the woods, and brewing up natural homeremedies to combat common ailments are also skills which will enhance the chances of survival. Medical preps are almost always considered the most difficult aspect of completing self-reliance goals. Even during a short term disaster the need for advanced first aid and replacements for lost prescription medications could quickly become an issue. When the mobile FEMA camp centers arrive in your town, do not stake your life on the staffers coming with diabetes medications and antibiotics.  Click here to read the rest of the prepping and FEMA camps series part 3 report.

Prepper Camp 2015 - Why Going To Camp Could Save Your Life

Daylight savings time might be making us all a little bit sleepy this week, but the turning up of the clocks also signals one very important thing – the pending arrival of spring. The winter that seemed like it would never end will finally be drawing to a close. All of us bargain hunters often consider spring the start of “yard sale season.” While I am looking forward to short-sleeves weather and tables full of on the cheap potential preps dotting front yards around America, I am even more excited about the beginning of a new prepper expo season.

Preparedness conventions and expos abound in the spring and summer months. Such events have become so popular and profitable that indoor expos are being created on a smaller scale even during the chilly winter months. I have attended and been a presenter at prepper expos, and interviewed organizers of events held around the nation. Although most are great event hosted by folks knowledgeable about self-reliance, others are merely glorified trade shows.

A new kid on the survival block emerged last year, Prepper Camp™, and took the preparedness community by storm. The camp, which was the brainchild of Survivalist Gardener Rick Austin, focused on preparedness education. Many hands went into the planning and operation of Prepper Camp™ 2014, as Rick is quick to point out, but it was well worth the effort – and the drive regardless of where you live in the country. This is not an empty claim or a paid endorsement.

We drove 10 hours pulling a trailer stacked full of firewood and primitive camping gear to get to Saluda, North Carolina where Prepper Camp™ was held at the Orchard Lake Campground. About nine hours into the trip, my husband Bobby’s Blazer had what we thought was a radiator issue – the smell of an overheating vehicle at night on the side of a mountain is most assuredly not a welcome scent. Since we were virtually straddling a state line and in the middle of no where, AAA got very confused about which office in which state should come to our aid. Calendula Flowers Medicinal And Survival Uses

The calendula flower has a multitude of medicinal uses and should be granted a lengthy row in your off-the-grid pharmacy garden or adorning pots on your front porch. The flower garnered its name because it blooms in a calendar cycle — or once each month during the full moon. The calendula is native to the northern Mediterranean region.

Keeping dried leaves from the calendula flower in mason jars will also add a bit of extra flavor to your long-term storage foods. For centuries, the flower has been added to soups, rice dishes, cereals and salads. Beginning about seven decades ago, American doctors began using petals from the calendula flower to treat fevers, burns, minor skin infections, amenorrhea, conjunctivitis, cuts, scrapes and bruises.

Earlier this week, I was once again thrilled to get to attend the weeklong Amish auction in Mount Hope, Ohio. The region where the massive auction takes place is known as Ohio Amish Country and attracts visitors from all around the country. The offerings and the deals at the highly anticipated once-a-year auction surpass the incredible deals offered on weekends throughout the year at the Mount Hope Amish auction facility. FEMA Camps Series Part 2 - What To Expect When 'Help' Rolls Into Town

A natural disaster happens in your town and FEMA immediately rolls in to help and provides all the food and water the community will need, right? Well, not exactly, not by a long shot. A FEMA camp, not the rights-infringing keep you behind barbed wire pointing inwards type that we discussed in the first article in the series, but the makeshift camps which appear after hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, and power outages, should not be counted upon to be the salvation of a town in dire need.

Four years ago during the week of July 4, a massive power outage struck the Midwest. My entire southern Ohio region was without power for at least seven days. Temperatures were nearly record-breaking that week, with 104 degrees and extreme humidity becoming the norm. The “it’s 95 degrees in the shade” phrase quickly went from being a slogan coined to note really hot weather to an adept and powerfully accurate description of the reality we all began facing starting around 9 a.m. each day.

My rescued desert tortoises and the Amish families in our area were the only ones who went about their daily business undeterred. Sure, preppers were situated far better than their non-prepper neighbors, but there is nothing like going a week without power to prompt an immediate re-evaluation of your preps, skills, and overall self-reliance plan. Lady's Got A Gun!

Practicing for my concealed carry test. I didn't want to be "the girl" in the class. My husband first taught me how to shoot on a dependable old .22, then I moved up to the .380, and then finally fell in love with the Ruger .40 he bought me. I can now take it apart and put it back together with my eyes closed.
Recently my daughter and I started teaching several of her friends how to shoot. None of those young ladies will ever have to shake in fear and pray that the 911 call brings help in time.

FEMA Camps Series Part 1 - Will They Happen In America?

FEMA camps, just reading the words invoke an immediate sense of foreboding and anger in many Americans. Call such emergency government facilities resettlement camps or refugee camps if you like, but the freedom-infringing will be just the same despite the text on the entrance sign. If following a guy who introduces himself by saying, “Hi, I’m from the government and I’m here to help” does not sound like a pleasant way to spend a few months or years, then you had better start preparing now.
A while back by husband Bobby was flipping channels and happened to land on Red Dawn (the original cult classic and not the cheesy remake) and we watched the scene where the townsfolk were herded in “re-education” camps by their new masters. Bobby turned to me and said, in all seriousness, “If you love me, you had better shoot me if I am ever ushered into a place like that.” Now, I love my best friend with my whole entire heart, and would surely rather use the expert target skills he taught me to rescue him than to put him out of his misery. Being captured and placed in a FEMA camp would be devastating, but feeling grateful that such a place existed and  voluntarily walking behind the barbed wire because you felt it was you only option for survival would be far worse. EMP Attack Threats To Power Grid Issued By Security Experts, Ignored By The Federal Government

An EMP attack on the power grid has security experts concerned and responding to the decision by NORAD to move back into the Cheyenne Mountain complex. Dr. Peter Vincent Pry and Henry F. Cooper believe the North American Aerospace Defense Command has abruptly decided to return to its Cold War era home due to mounting electromagnetic pulse attack concerns.

“Why the return?” Henry F. Cooper and Peter Vincent Pry pondered in a jointly written power grid EMP report. “Because the enormous bunker in the hollowed-out mountain, built to survive a Cold War-era nuclear conflict, can also resist an electromagnetic-pulse attack, or EMP.”

Jade Helm 15 - Ted Cruz Shares Thoughts On Martial Law Concerns

Jade Helm 15 has caught the attention of Ted Cruz. The Republican presidential candidate stated over the weekend that he has been made aware of concerns relating to the realistic military training (RMT) slated to take place in seven southwestern states in July.
Ted Cruz had this to say about Operation Jade Helm 15 concerns during an interview with Bloomberg at the South Carolina Republican Party convention on Saturday.
“My office has reached out to the Pentagon to inquire about this exercise. We are assured it is a military training exercise.."

Power Grid EMP Threats Should Be DHS Focus, Arizona Rep. Trent Franks Says

The Department of Homeland Security is being urged to place far more of a focus on the safety and security of the power grid. The most important and heavily relied upon piece of American infrastructure is increasingly a target of attack by both man and nature.
Every minute of every day we face a deadly threat in America, yet very few are paying attention to the problem. A downed power grid would change life as we know it more than virtually any other doomsday scenario ever could; and is far more likely than a plethora of the apocalyptic scenarios contrived by Hollywood producers.

Should the power grid go down for just a single week, approximately one million Americans will likely die. Many scientists agree that such a doomsday scenario would also cause trillions of dollars’ worth of damage. With the very existence of such a significant portion of society on the line, a logical person would think that the government would be taking the idea of a massive solar storm, cyber attack, or EMP attack, far more seriously. But, applying logic or common sense to the way career politicians think is a futile endeavor. Click here to read the rest of the power grid national security warning report.

Do The Alleged Russian Seizure Plans Of An Ukrainian Port Cause World War 3 Concerns?

Russia appears to be on a journey to re-establish itself as a world power. Vladimir Putin and his underlings rarely ever miss a chance to mock President Barack Obama on his lack of machismo on social networking websites. Beginning with flyover by Russian bombers last fall, to the national headlines about Russian spies in the United States, and most recently increase hostilities in the Ukraine, Russia seems laser-focused on becoming a country to be reckoned with on the global stage.
Is World War 3 looming around the next corner? Could a scene from the cult classic '80s movie Red Dawn actually occur on American soil? The United States must not be so focused on fighting the war on terror and the not-so "JV" threat posed by ISIS that our leaders neglect to recognize the other emerging cloud on the horizon.
Russia is planning to invade the Ukraine port of Mariupol this spring, according to at least one top United States intelligence official. Vladimir Putin reportedly considers the Ukrainian port a “strategic” location.
Vladimir Putin’s alleged plan to seize the Ukrainian port of Mariupol would reportedly include boots on the ground assistance by pro-Moscow rebels. If the port does come under Russian control, Putin would essentially have a “land bridge” and solid supply right in the Crimea region.
